Character ideas. Not final, just throwing ideas around. Dont know what class yet. Let me know what you think.

Homeworld of Karnia XI, a mining planet towards the outskirts of the Imperium. For hundreds of years the planet was a part of the Imperium without its knowledge. It was only in the last century that the Imperium began making tangible contact with the planet. Before this, most of the minerals were sold to rogue traders and the likes. The Imperium requisitioned the mining facilities and directing all exports towards the Terra system via a mercantilist system. The strict religious and criminal laws were imposed for the first half century, however neither the Ecclesiarchy nor the PDF nor the Imperial Governance could spare personell.

Emmanuel was born to poor parents, the youngest of two brothers. They were a mining family, no better or worse off than any others on the system. At the age of 12 he began accompanying his older brother and father in the mines. His older brother died in a mine shaft collapse soon after. At age 14, an unnancounced Imperial governor and retinue arrived and suceeded local control, declaring Karnia XI under the control of the Inquisition and thereby His Holiness, the Emperor God of Mankind.

Local trading posts were subsidised, land was redistributed and workers moved. Initially, some mineral farmers on the barren plains resisted the Imperial Decrees. The execution of one such farmer quickly caused an uproar however by this time a small force of Arbites operatives had been temporarily requisitioned from a nearby colonisation-fortress to oversea the transition and implementation of the governance.

After the initial unrest during the first 6 months, the population came to accept their new leadership. Massed riots, imprisonments and over 150 public executions had to be undertaken across the planet in order to instill ecclesiarchial religious law and the criminal laws of the Imperium. However, after this civil unrest, the populace became extremely obedient.

As Emmanuel grew older, he distanced himself from his submissive parents. They never amounted to anything in their lives, too cowardy to step beyond the monotony of their existence, never moving on from the loss of their eldest son. Emmanuel soon became associated with an underground workers movement in an effort to remove the Imperial Goverance. Underlying principals had been lost and the organisation remained as rather an outlet for anger and left wing anti-authoritarian thinking for young, supressed miners.

Pretty Good.

Would your character have continued on from this movement to do something drastic, maybe even an attempt on the Inquisitor's life.

Bear with me here, but maybe you could have gotten past his security or something, and then when you got to him, he convinced you to join him??

I don't know, just thought of that then, but you've set yourself up well for many different options.

Yeah, i like it also.

But maybe describe your homeworld more. How many people inhabited it, what is the terrain like, etc.

Also, because your planet was not part of the Imperium for many years, did they have any contact with Xenos as well as Rouge traders.

Finally, you are against the Imperial Authority, but what about the Imperial Faith?

Just a couple thoughts.

Duncan- good idea, but its going to be a while before he is recruited.

Stevo- I'll detail the terrain and demographics in the next post. Karnia XI was within the bounds of Imperial space, they were just unaware of their involvement. They were technically always part o the Imperium. They had no contact with xenos, simply because they were still safely within Imperial space. Currently, Emmanuel is still yound and outward thinking. He is opposed to the Ecclesiarchy simple because of its association with the Imperium. This will develop later.

At the age of 17 he began comitting minor offenses. vandalising Imperial property with profanities and wishful slogans. The first governor had been replaced after a clouded affair involving some kind of substance abuse. The new governor, keen to finish what his predecessor had started, began to crack down on crinimal offenses again, and enfore the will of the Imperium with greater tenacity.

The union had now become more of a gang and although they had no alias, the local arbites were becoming increasingly aware of their presence. The first member to be arrested, Logan Kinear, was caught the night before a significant step up in the groups criminal activites, along with 4 others. They had planned to commit arson, a crime punishable by death, in burning down the local tithe office. The imperial tithe had, with the instatement of the new Governor, increased dramatically, crippling many families. This had spurred the gang to act. Thus far, they had seen only sucess and their youthful anger had become calcuated confindence. However, the local Arbites chief had recieved a tip off.

The Chief was a man by the name of Odin Sagitaire. Considering the policies his superiors had adopted, he was an extremely personable companion. Unlike the chiefs of other sectors he preffered diplomacy and bargaining. He had many contacts that would be considered unproper for a man of his position, but his ever improving record allowed this small flaw in his methods to be overlooked. On the night of the raid, Emmanuel was on the side seat of the rear car. The car in front was cut off by traffic at an intersection 2 blocks from the tithe office. It was this piece of chance that granted Emmanuel his life. The front car continued to the warhouse on the opposite block, as planned. The owner had been bribed, no fan of the Imperium himself.

If Sagitaire had folllowed normal Arbites doctrine that night, the 5 gang members in that car would had recieved a lifetime imprisonment, maybe conscription, but escaped with their lives. However, he did not reveal himself until after the first firebomb was thrown. 4 Gang members went to the top level of the warhouse, whilst the driver waited in the car. They threw the bombs at exactly 10:30 pm, as planned, not waiting for their companions in the rear car. As they returned downstars for the bail out, they found their driver had been arrested and they too were taken into custody.

The warhouse owner and all 5 gang members were convicted without delay and executed. Emmanuel discovered 5 years later that it was his own father who had tipped off Sagitaire, ignorant of the consequences. After the shock of their failure the gang effectively disbanded.

Karnia XI- Imperial Mining World

The primary exports include farmed magnetite rocks, a substitue for promethean gas, not military quality and Urson, a simple gun metal used to make ammunition and cables. These exports are useful to the general industrial strength of the Imperium, however the planet posesses no rare materials. In the event of a purge, there would be many other more suitable mineral deposits on far larger systems to replace Karnia's contributions.

The planet is generally quite barren. Most of the soft soil has either eroded or the soil has become very thin. As a result, vegitation is sparse, but hardy, usually growing only to low levels. The planet has two oceans, both of which store vast amounts of unprospected minerals.

The population numbers no more than 15 million, although there are still some nomadic populations that are not recorded in any census or ballot, left ignored by the Governance. Most of the population centres are very close to large mineral deposits. As a result, the relatively small population is spread out across the planets surface. The capitol, Xandra, has a population of 2 million. There is currently a permanent PDF garrision of 300,000 and a standing Arbites force of 4500 agents.

Emmanuel left the mines and began working in the starport docks, leaving his decrepid parents behind. Two years later, his mother died. Proper medical attention couldn't be afforded, so the cause of her death was still unknown. This was the last time he returned to see his father. The absence of purpose in his life led him to extremes. He began dabbling on the other side of the political spectrum and became devout in his offerings and prayers. He joined a pilgrimage to Holy Terra and left on a 3 month journey on a mineral barge. Before he left, without his knowledge, an inquisitor had arrived to investiage the success of the colonisation. Among other things, he arrested Odin Sagitairre for wilfully allowing the damage of Imperial property.

He was 22 when he arrived on Holy Terra. After initially drenching himself in the ways of the ecclesiarchy he began moving away from the devotions of the religion. He began using the guise of a pilgrim to help smuggle cheap amasec into the system. He soon joined a smugglers gang, having cast off the guise of the holy-man. He joined a man named Dane Raether on his ship, the Apostle. Raether was a former Arbites agent and had been smuggling for 12 years. His knowledge of security protocol proved invaluable in his trade and he was well known and respected for his reliability throughout the Terran sector.

Emmanuel's first experience of combat came on a job that led them to one of the moons of Tarandris. A particularly enigmatic inspection officer was being escorted through the cargo hold of the Apostle when he dropped his databoard. The ship's false floor had a lever located behind one of the gas pipes, lining the cargo bay wall, right where the databoard had fallen. Upon bending down, the officer noticed the lever, however, Raether was oblivious. Emmanuel was, at the time, working on the raised plankway above, and saw the whole incident. The officer, no-doubt, would call for the cargo bay to undergo further inspection for such a finding. Given the contents that were held in the docking bay for this particular job, the entire crew would be executed for possession of illicit material. In this knowledge, Emmanuel drew his revolver and shot the offier in the top of the head, through the walkway grate.

Raether, now with a dead imperial officer on his ship, was forced to flee before completing the transaction. His clients would be just as virulent in their pursuit as the Imperium. The Apostle fled the docks, leaving two further dead security guards, and a further three wounded. One of the ships crew was killed in the fire fight. Once in space, the cargo and bodies were dumped. The ship had been carrying false Inquisitorial Rosettas. How exactly Raether had come across such cargo, and why he agreed to transport remained a mystery to Emmanuel.

Raether and his crew had become first class criminals. They had to be extremely careful in their movements. Raether, unpterred, continued his buisiness, moving on to new clients, this time in a more volatile sector. For the next 3 years, Emmanuel became a veteran of many combats and underworld activities. The Holace sector is riddled with pirates. The space sits between two major warp space highways and is a veritable hole in the Imperium's internal naval security. It is one of the major black market hubs of the inner Imperium. It was the perfect place to hide their identiy, where there would be very few security checks. However, it also meant a vastly increased competition.

Emmanuel had become devoutly loyal to Raether, his longest serving crew members. Since he first joined the crew on Terra, all but himself had moved on or been killed. Raether thought it time to move back to his original clients, believing it would be safe to re-emerge. Barely a month later, the ship was boarded.

They had docked at the starport Illidas. Most of the crew had left for the evening to drink and please themselves in the bowels of the city. Only Emmanuel, Raether, and two others were still on board. The docking bay was open. They were caught unaware as several inquisitorial agents entered the ship. They quickly cut down the first two crew members. Raether was held at gunpoint and dragged to the back of cargo hold, but not killed. Emmanuel, although taking a glancing shotgun wound to the chest, dispatched the two remaining henchmen. Only the man holding Raether and Emmanuel remained, at opposite ends of the cargo bay. After a short standoff. The man removed his helmet to the shock of Emmanuel. He found himself facing Odin Sagitairre. The tension was broken and both Raether and Sagitairre were killed, Raether at Sagitairre's hand, Sagitairre by Emmanuel. A hulking figure then emerged from outside, entering through the open docking bay door. Emmanuel, now dizzying as the adrenalin left his body, was quickly overpowered and drugged.

Sagitarrie had recieved a description of Emmanuel from his father, so many years ago, and it has always puzzled him when it came to the arrest that none of the gang members matched this description. Three years later, he was forced into service by an Inquisitor, being blackmailed with professional misconduct during the arrest of the gang members. During his time working for the Inquisitor, he passed this elusive description on to the Inquisitor. A few years later, the Inquisitor sent Sagitairre to track down a batch of Forged Inquisitorial rosettas. This led them to Dane Raether and Emmanual Leiter. Upon seeing Emmanuel and matching him to the description, and being impressed at his combatative skills, the Inquisitor decided to recruit the smuggler. Emmnuel has no love for the Inquisitor, for he destroyed his livelihood and killed Raether, a man who acted as more of a father to him than his own father on Kandria. He was told that it was his father who tipped off Sagitairre but when he returned to Kandria, many years later, his father had passed away, prematurely, of old age.

Excellent work here goldie. Its a deep story with a couple big characters in some of the galaxy's major planets (Terra)

I love how by the end of the story everything seems to fall into place and your inducted into the Inquisition.

The only thing is, could you clarify where you character stands currently on major issues, like Imperial faith and authority, etc

Impeial Authority - In his early life Leiter always had an aversion to authority. This probably arose due to his cultural paradigm on Kandria, and later from his time spent as a contemporary of Dane Raether. Now, as an Inquisitorial agent, his personal position of authority creates internal conflict. However, Inquisitors do not always work in an outwardly authoritative manner. Whilst still principally against Imperial dominance, he enjoys his freedom. When he himself is not supressed, he is uncarring. His political views beyond this are careless. He believes in personal livelihood and the actions of authority that occur outside his person are superfluous.

The Emperor - Having dabbled heavily with the ecclesiarchy, Leiter has become vaguely disposed of the Emperor. He has experienced the light of Terra albeit his conclusions have led him elswehere. His trust lies in people, rather than in a relgion. To him, Worship of the Emperor appears to be faith in faith itself. He does not share this view with others.

Xenos - Having had little experience of Xenos, Leiter's opinions are not developed. Cultural influence has seeped into his mindset since birth and he opposes xenos on principal, however his convictions are not strong. Xenos contacts and Xenos weaponry should be valued on its function and merits, however still treated with caution.

Mutants and Witches - Leiter has seen the power of Chaos corrupt and its pall disgusts him. However, his opposition to Chaotic umbra is personal. He sees it as an affliction to his person. He does not oppose it on religious grounds or in an effort to restore mankind from its grip. It is an instinctive opponent.

Psykers and Navigators - Leiter knows little of their ways and so treats them with caution and curiosity. However, he has the integrity to overlook cultural bias and realise the potential of such beings as allies, and by the same token, the danger of them as his foes.

Killing - Leiter's first kill was instinctive, albeit, not elegant, resulting in the death of one of his crew members. However, after years in the underground, he has become accostomed to the presence of death and the company of murderers. It does not worry him. He does not kill without cause, but does not waste time in value judgement if the situation calls for resolution.

Zeal - Leiter treats religious fanatics with dismay. They devote their lives to something insubstantial and let their spirit slowly decay because of their own convictions. He is a man of appropriated moderation and sees function as more valuable than blind passion.

The Inquisition - Prior to his recruitment, Leiter had no experience of the power of the Inquisition. Although outwardly he is still cold to his superiors for the death of Raether, he quietly has enormous respect for him. The power and forcfulness that he experiences thrills him. Although he does not agree with the more radical elements of the Ordos, he has convinced himself that they are neccessary, overlooking his personal contradiction.

Technology - Technology is a function to Leiter. The manic priest of the Mechanicus are religious fools. He looks for purpose from technology. Many of the inventions of mankind are superfluous, many more still are worthless to Leiter and some are of the highest value to him. He has no opposotion to the research and use of Xenos technolgy where is has practical application to himself or his allies.

Society and Wealth - Leiter grew up as a lower class citizen and never reached beyond this. He has seen more of the Imperium than most and has realised that wishful thinking is simply that. The majority of the human race lives in squalor. Power is wealth to Lieter, and power lies with those who take it.

Personability - Generally, Leiter is quite amicable to those who he respects. Fanatics and zealots he dislikes and generally talks to little, if at all. However, he rarely openly opposes their perspectives, keeping to himself. Those few people who share his values, and have entered his inner circle of trust, he treats with utmost respect. Only these few, such as Logan Kinear and his elder brother, ever saw the real, entire persona of Emmanueal Leiter.
